avoid GISOL like the plague!

THE FOLLOWING IS BASED ON TRUE EVENTS, MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS HORRIBLE HOSTING COMPANY!
A NIGHTMARE THAT LASTED 7 YEARS...


You may ask yourself why I let this go on for so long,... originally I never signed up with GISOL! Here's what happened in a nutshell...

Since 1996 I have been designing websites, writing articles and put them on free hosting services, like back in the day; Xoom.com, GeoCities and Fortunecity. I decided I wanted a domain for my website to get rid of all the banners and pop ups and actually make reading my website a pleasant experience for my readers.
I searched for providers.. I came across Ireg.com, a relatively cheap hosting company. I got like a 100 MB server space and about 5 mailboxes, which was alot back then, but that's all I really wanted and needed. So I registered a .com domain.
And hosting with them was not bad at all, they did what they promised, and servers were up most of the time.
A few years later Ireg.com was taken over by Ampira, my account and domain were transferred to this company and the prices and my hosting package were the same, actually nothing really changed, until a few years later in 2000...

Ampira became GISOL...

Global Internet Solutions, sounds good right? They had promises that were unheard of back then (like unlimited bandwidth, space etc) the only problem was... I could hardly work on my website since if was up 20% or sometimes not at all! I wrote emails and chatted with tech support almost daily, what was really messed up in the end... my domain was gone.
Who, whah? Now what happen'?
Yes, during an 'upgrade' on their servers something went wrong and my domain cyrell.com was put in redemption mode. They somehow let it expire and someone else bought it and put it up for sale...
All the effort and work I put into it all these years to promote the site was vanished because of their error. They promised me a better package then I had originally and everything was going to be fine because now they were part of a 'much larger' company with better whatever it was they claimed.. I even got a new free domain registration with them (cyrell.net), the new hosting package was indeed bigger that I originally had...
I installed my website once again, this time under a new name (the .net)..
Hoping that everything would be better now because of the 'new' server, everything was worse then it was before!
The uptime of their servers was almost non existent. The server got 'clogged' because there were too many connections at once they told me (I got maybe 20 hits a day back then) so they had to reset the server... this had to be done almost three times a week.. (on a good week believe it or not) I asked if I could do it myself in case it happened again, but 'live support' told me it was something that had to be done their side.
Weird thing was, every tech support session with them, he pretended he never chatted with me before in his life and always said the same thing.

"Our senior technicians are looking into this issue and will get back to you as soon as possible, I created a trouble ticket for you."

That's a major issue in my opinion! And almost daily I had to contact them because the website was down. Then I became to think that I was maybe talking to a robot (like an automated messaging support system) but that wasn't the case because I could ask specific questions and sometimes he made typos because he typed too fast... like

"Our seniorr technicans are looking into this isue and will get back to you as soon as possible, I have craeted a trouble ticket."

Or he would get annoyed;

"We will fix it! Have patience.."

Then they 'upgraded' their severs, I was kind of relieved because maybe this was the source of all the trouble..
I couldn't login into my admin panel anymore and my website was down,... a painful process that lasted about 2 weeks followed,.. in the end it turned out I had to sign up for a new package (that probably included the new server setting, somehow he wasn't able to upgrade my package).
That was enough, I had to get rid of these guys! I looked for a new host, anything was better then this! I asked if I could transfer my domain to the new host and I couldn't.
Why not I asked, and the reason became clear after I did some research,
A normal hosting company, once you buy a domain, it's yours. And you can do pretty much anything you want with it..

with GISOL YOU DON'T OWN YOUR DOMAIN YOU LEASE IT FROM THEM!

So basically I couldn't do anything anymore with them, a site that less then 20% up time and no ability to transfer it to a better host?!

Then they shut off my site (the .net), claiming it had expired a month ago, I DEMANDED an explanation for this act! Why wouldn't they have notified me, they had my email address, my credit card information, everything they needed to have to renew my domain!
And the renewal was only $9.99 for a year! I email tech support, created a trouble ticket, tried to call them (don't even go there) but no response!

That was the final straw! I was done with them, I had it, no more! I didn't care anymore if I lost my domain! After struggling for so long I had enough! I was fed up! I cancelled with them via 'live support' because their 'cancel' button in the admin panel didn't work (of course)

I was angry with them and wanted to tell the truth about what a horrible company they were etc. But I remained calm, after all they did have my credit card information and at this point they could do anything they wanted, I just thought, I'll say that I don't want to do websites anymore...

Neo, who I know for years (who is also known as Adrian or Sonny) claimed all of a sudden they have the best tech support??!?!?!???!!?!?!??!?!?! I wanted to yell at them so bad but I kept my calm.. I started sweating actually and was afraid that they were going to give me a hard time canceling. And what kind of answer is that?! You can use it in the future? I want to CANCEL DAMNIT! Cancel my account, don't ask questions!

Throughout the years I have been joking with my readers about how GISOL is probably just a one man operation, a lonely guy that sitting in his mom's basement running hosting software on his old computer.. But sometimes you started to think that while talking with 'tech support'.
There is nothing more frustrating for a webmaster to see his website offline without any notification and tech support telling him

"Your issue has been forwarded to our senior technicians"

This is my story with them, I signed up with a new host and a new name and it's wonderful! Not one single issue at all, the website has been up a 100% so far and prompt support, they even send you an email with a follow up evaluation on how you experienced tech support.

SO DON'T SIGN UP WITH GISOL!!! AND IF YOU DID ALREADY IN THE PAST

See for yourself how shady they are, if you still have doubts after reading this site:

  • The 'limited time offer' on their site always resets in the end, so basically you NEVER miss out on a good deal then, heh,

  • The website hasn't changed since September 2001 (!!!) don't believe me? check the following http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.gisol.com and click 'Sept 24 2001' exactly the same heh?

  • read their 'policy'

  • type 'gisol' in google.com and be surprised, hehe, see I'm not joking or making this up!
